AVG is a strong competitor in the antivirus protection market, and distinguishes itself by making plenty of features free that other companies sell at a premium. Its free antivirus plan is fairly comprehensive, and its cheapest premium product is a complete antivirus solution. While it does have faults, which we’ll get into, it’s solid enough in 2020 to remain on our list of the best antivirus software.

The first thing to understand about AVG AntiVirus is its relationship to Avast, which acquired it in 2016. While the two products remain distinct, both are now based on Avast’s detection network, and so both products score exactly the same for security. The main differences are the user interface and the features offered at different subscription levels.

We performed hands-on tests on AVG to find out how well it keeps your devices safe, in addition to bringing in some corroborating research. Our AVG AntiVirus review analyzes its free and premium features, pricing structure, usability, protection power and tech support, all before rendering a final verdict.

Before we start, there’s a note about AVG that, in good conscience, we can’t ignore. A report from January 2020 revealed that Avast has been selling its users’ browsing data to advertisers, including that of AVG users.

Jumpshot, the Avast subsidiary company that sold the data, was suspended soon after the reports came out, but this doesn’t prove it’s finished harvesting data.

We’ll be reviewing AVG independently of these concerns, but we wanted you to be able to make an informed choice. We recommend avoiding Avast, AVG and Avast’s other products until information comes out that proves Avast has changed its ways. The AVG AntiVirus Free plans focus on providing basic antivirus protections for your personal device and web connection. The free antivirus software is available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices in different forms, and includes a basic, quick scan for performance issues, which can be launched anytime.

AVG also runs continuous protections in the background. Its free plan includes a file shield that scans any file added to or opened on your computer, and it quarantines them in a vault where they can be tested without any risk. While you browse the web, AVG scans any data being transferred, and it also scans incoming and outgoing emails for unsafe attachments.

Depending on your platform, AVG AntiVirus Free might include some extra features. Mac users only get the basic scan, file shield and web shield.

As a Windows user, you’ll get access to a performance scanner, which digs through your PC for unnecessary files that might be slowing it down (but aren’t necessarily malware). You’ll also get to download AVG’s secure browser, which aims to look and act as much like Chrome as possible while adding AVG’s ad blocker, password manager and privacy cleaner.

AVG AntiVirus Free for Android includes a suite of mobile-specific anti-theft and privacy features. You can lock down individual apps with a PIN, set a camera trap for thieves, set your device to lock if the SIM card is removed and track it down with AVG’s anti-theft website.

For iOS users, there’s AVG Mobile Security for iPhone/iPad, a free product that protects iOS devices with a VPN, a photo vault and a continuously operating leak alert system.

Paid Features

AVG Internet Security is the first level of premium subscription, and it equalizes AVG’s features across Macs and PCs. While AVG Free does scan for potential ransomware, its Internet Security option aims for an extra level of protection by targeting the potential sources of ransomware for extra attention.

Internet Security adds payment protections, which takes advantage of AVG’s network of known fake websites and phishing sites to point out scams while you’re browsing. Privacy protections have also been bulked up, with webcam security, file encryption and a document shredder added.

Downloading Internet Security with an extra fee gives you a license for up to 10 household devices, including Android phones. The highest paid level, AVG Ultimate, bundles in AVG TuneUp, a separate product that optimizes performance on both Windows and Mac devices.

There are also a couple of à la carte apps to consider. TuneUp can be bought separately, and so can AVG’s Secure VPN, which protects your web browsing privacy (but only on PCs).

Just looking at AVG’s product comparison page makes it clear the company is trying to make pricing and planning as easy to understand as possible.

There are only two plans beyond AVG AntiVirus Free: Internet Security costs $70 per year for one device and $90 per year for 10 devices, and Ultimate is the same plan with one more product for $120 per year (on unlimited devices).

On its own, AVG TuneUp costs $50 per year for Windows and $80 per year for Mac. AVG’s Secure VPN costs $90 per year. Everything else is free. The one complaint about how it’s presented is that it isn’t easy to actually see a lineup of what features come with which products, because AVG prefers to list benefits that are harder to quantify.

AVG AntiVirus shares one big selling point with its parent company Avast: affordability. Its free versions come with features that other antivirus companies hide behind paywalls, and its premium features cost less than the competition.

This claim still holds up on the latest versions. AVG Free is a strong protection package on any system. Its full computer scan merges a threat detection and performance scan to catch malicious software in all the places it’s most likely to be, and it clears out harmful browser extensions, to boot.

Real-time protection of file downloads and web browsing is fairly standard with free antivirus protection, but performance scanning isn’t, so it’s great to see here. The secure browser comes with even more usually paywalled features, including the file shredder and password manager, which are some of the best touches here.

AVG’s first level of premium is a complete package that competes with any similar level in the whole antivirus protection ecosystem. The fact that the higher level just adds a separate product and more subscriptions should tell you how total your coverage is at its Internet Security level.

There are still some things missing: there’s no password vault and you have to download the VPN separately. Given how many free VPNs are available for all kinds of devices right now, that in particular seems like a strange thing to leave out and leads to unnecessary complication for many users in the long run.

User Friendliness

Let’s talk more about AVG’s stated dedication to simplicity, and how close the software gets to that goal. A strong early indicator is that installation is lightning-fast, with a very short time between clicking download and looking directly at the main interface window.

If you’re on a Mac, installation can take less than a minute, even for the premium Internet Security. On a PC, things will take longer, as you’ll need to configure the installation to your own preferences. This mainly means whether you want to install AVG Secure Browser, whether to make it your default browser and exactly what features to install.

If you choose to not install something right away, you can add it in later as long as you have the license for it. Installation options generally add more usability than inconvenience, and installation is still very easy and quick.

Once you’ve installed, you’re presented with a dark interface with large, distinct green windows: either four (if you’re on a Mac) or five (if you’re on a PC). Together, with the separate button for launching a scan, these comprise most of AVG AntiVirus’s functionality at any level.

Launching a scan is the heart of what you’ll be actively doing with the AVG UI. You can start a scan just by clicking the button. If you’re running a free version, this will be the full computer scan that combines performance and malware detection.

On AVG Internet Security or higher, click next to the scan button to change what kind of scan you want it to run. On Windows, this gives you six scan options.

Scanning Options

“Computer scan” is a basic threat scan that looks for malware, spyware, ransomware and other types of virus. Meanwhile, “deep scan” goes into your storage and memory to look for any viruses that might be hiding from the basic scan.

The other four scans are more specialized. “USB/DVD scan” checks removable external devices for viruses. “File/folder scan” checks specific files or folders on your computer.

“Performance scan” looks for files that aren’t hostile but might be creating lag. “Boot-time scan” launches before Windows does on a reboot, catching any malware that relies on Windows to operate.

On a Mac, you’ve got three options. “Mac scan” is a basic scan that looks at the most vulnerable parts of your Mac. “Deep scan” is similar to the PC option and goes into deeper parts of your Mac to check for viruses in your storage and memory. Finally, “file scan” scans specific files you name.

You can run scans immediately or schedule them to happen when you aren’t using your computer. You might not find yourself doing this often, though, as AVG AntiVirus’ effect on system performance is almost nonexistent. A deep scan took about 10 minutes and resulted in negligible lag.

AVG’s user interface does an excellent job of making sure you’ve got all the information. You’ll almost never find yourself confused about what each scan does, or what a button is for. You’re free to customize each scan, if you like, but AVG AntiVirus works just as well if you don’t.

Outside of the scanning panel, things are just as clean. Clicking any of the large green buttons takes you to an equally simple panel where you can turn modules on and off, or customize them as necessary. It’s marvelously designed, self-explanatory and not intimidating in the slightest for those who are new to antivirus software.

One last thing to bring up here is the secure browser, which almost succeeds in its goal of mimicking Chrome. This makes it all the stranger that the default search engine is Yahoo, but that’s not hard to fix.

Protection

No user interface is good enough to recommend an antivirus that doesn’t do the basic job of keeping your computer safe. With that in mind, let’s see how good AVG AntiVirus is at its core functionality.

We subjected AVG’s desktop antivirus to the five tests provided by the Anti-Malware Standards Testing Organization, checking five separate types of virus: manually downloaded malware, a potentially unwanted application, drive-by downloaded malware, compressed malware and phishing pages.

We also tested AVG AntiVirus’s connection to its cloud-based lookup system by downloading a file that could not be recognized by local lookups.

AVG succeeded easily on all five tests, but it failed to catch the virus that could only be detected by a cloud-based system. It did, however, catch that file on a scan once it was already on our hard drive.

We went to external testing agencies to get corroborating statistics. Things looked great on AV-Test, which awarded “top product” status to AVG AntiVirus last year. In both November and December of 2019, AVG AntiVirus detected 100 percent of zero-day malware attacks and 100 percent of well-known attacks discovered in the previous four weeks.

AV-Comparatives paints a more mixed picture, though still quite solid. While AVG scored the highest possible rating of three stars for its effect on system performance, it detected eight false positives on a “real-world” test.

On the most recent AV-Comparatives malware protection test, AVG AntiVirus scored near the top. It detected 99.3 percent of malware test packets while online, and 97.4 percent when offline. It was also one of three companies (another being AVG’s owner, Avast) to score a perfect 100-percent protection rate: no malware was able to make any changes to the device.

For a fourth opinion, we checked with MRG Effitas, a firm focused on preventing digital financial fraud. It found that AVG caught 100 percent of malware packets within 24 hours of the malware’s arrival, though it missed 3.3 percent of attacks on the initial scan.

When it comes to protection, AVG AntiVirus is mostly a top-tier product. It’s held back only by an occasional lag in its vigilance (though it always gets the virus in the end) and by the worrying prevalence of false positives.

Support

82 % – Good

When you have a problem with AVG AntiVirus, your first line of defence is a brief FAQ located within the user interface. If that doesn’t answer your question, you can go directly to the AVG help web page from within the program window.

The web page includes a larger FAQ that’s broken down by AVG’s different products. It goes into more detail, but it’s still mostly for routine procedure and less helpful for troubleshooting edge cases. For those, you can submit tickets directly to AVG.

It’s a little difficult to discover how to send these tickets. You won’t find the “get more help” button anywhere at the top level. Instead, it’s located at the end of every product subpage in the FAQ. Once you click the button, you’re taken to a form where you can get email help if you’re a free user.

If you’re a paying user, you’ll be prompted to enter more information, and you can decide whether you’d like a support tech to call or live chat with you when it’s time to resolve your ticket. Like finding the form to begin with, it’s not very intuitive: nowhere in the tech support page is it made clear that you can’t call or chat as a free subscriber.

Your final option for getting help is to go into the AVG forums, which require you to create an account. Once inside, you’ll see the top posts of that day, with links to specific topics in an easy-to-reach sidebar. It’s reasonably active, but oftentimes the most helpful responses are from AVG’s own staff, meaning it might be easier to just contact them directly.

Should you need it, there’s also a premium tech support option, where AVG’s experts remotely access your computer to help diagnose problems. However, this costs $79 for simple fixes, $119 for complex fixes and $200 for an annual subscription.

The Verdict

AVG does a fine job of standing out in a crowded antivirus market. It succeeded at neutralizing all six test threats that we threw at it, proving that its team has clearly been focusing on keeping its infrastructure and detection network up to date (even if it caught one threat on an after-the-fact scan).

Yet the real reason to go with AVG AntiVirus over other antivirus programs — even from Avast — is its UI. It’s so well-designed and intuitive that we can’t imagine needing to go to the help page unless you have a truly strange problem. Just looking at it tells you everything you need to know about how it works.

There are drawbacks to AVG AntiVirus: you can access unlimited devices only through an Ultimate subscription, it has a somewhat high rate of false positives and it would have been nice to see the VPN bundled with one of the paid subscriptions.

Of course, you should also consider the credible reports of Avast’s data harvesting. Despite Jumpshot being shut down, there’s no clear sign that using AVG no longer risks getting your data sold to a corporate client. With so many antivirus options on the internet, you have no reason to go with one that doesn’t work as hard as possible to maintain your trust.

A Quick Overview

We ran AVG through its paces on our 2020 Lenovo Thinkpad to see just what it could do. We examined both its free and Internet Security versions, we studied its privacy policy in-depth, and we considered what programs it offers for other platforms.

AVG includes on-access scanning, which means as soon as we opened the program it began scanning and continued to scan in the background as long as it was open. But it also offered the option for on-demand scanning. Any time we felt just a bit nervous, we could run a Smart Scan, which took just seconds to search for basic issues like viruses, malware, and bad browser add-ons. Or, we could run a deep scan that checked out absolutely every file on our laptop. AVG uses a behavior-based approach to its scanning, looking specifically for:

AVG’s more advanced tools, available for less than $6.49 a month, include additional features:

We went with AVG’s mid-range package, which they call Internet Security, and we were able to protect 10 devices. Because, after all, what’s the point of protecting our laptop if our tablet and our phone are vulnerable to attacks?

Downloading the Software

Downloading AVG Antivirus software was straightforward enough. The company’s homepage has a nice bright green link right at the top offering a “Free Download.” Of course, there are links to the paid Mac, PC, and Mobile versions, but we prefer to try things out before we lay any money down. And to be honest, AVG makes it easy to start with a free plan, which includes a file scanner and a basic firewall against viruses and malware; the download and installation took under a minute. And once we were convinced that the tools they offered were worth an investment, there was an easy option in the program’s drop-down menu to enter an activation code. We instantly went from Basic to Full protection, which included access to webcam protection, payment protection, and an advanced firewall.

Like a lot of antivirus companies out there, AVG seems always out to convince us that we won’t be completely safe until we’ve purchased enough subscriptions to feel as though our computer is as protected as Fort Knox. In their case, this comes in the form of an initial scan which found that our computer was “cluttered” and slowed down by 314 performance issues requiring our immediate attention. Of course, the moment we clicked the “Resolve” button, we were taken to a link where we were encouraged to buy more software. We’ve never been especially cool with these sorts of marketing tricks. Does our computer really need a tune-up just six months after we bought it? We’re doubtful.

Still, AVG didn’t actually lie and tell us our computer had malware when it didn’t. If there’s one thing we won’t stand for, it’s flat-out lying. In the end, once we knew the scans were always going to claim we had performance issues, it was a pretty simple matter to ignore the constant advice that we repair them.

FYI: Ransomware can attack your device using a number of different vectors. All of them have the same result, however: ransomware encrypts user files and then demands a ransom to restore them.

In addition to its free version, AVG offers two levels of paid antivirus security for a yearly fee. Each level provides a variety of different tools, and all three are available on the AVG homepage.

The Experience of Using AVG

Like we said before, we took the time to see what came in the free package before we went all in. Below, we outline both experiences.

Free Package

As soon as we opened the software, the main page laid our options out in clear, easy-to-understand terms. At the bottom of the screen, a button offered us an on-demand Smart Scan. Of course, we pushed that before we bothered checking out the other tools, and to our great relief discovered in just seconds that we were virus-free. We do like to maintain a clean machine. Next to this button, AVG also told us when we ran our last virus scan and exactly how long it had been since our virus database had been updated. Finally, we had many other scanning options. We ran a deep scan, which took just over 34 minutes, and looked at our entire system including storage drives, memory, and rootkits. We also had the option to schedule scans, including recurring scans. And we could see a monthly history of what AVG had managed to uncover.

Above the Scan button, the page displayed our additional options. To the left were our two primary tools, those that came with the free version. On the right, AVG reminded us of the three tools that were unlocked when we put in our credit card. The free tools included:

Computer protection: Computer protection essentially means what it says. AVG kept a constant eye on the health of our computer, ensuring it was fine now and that it stayed that way. Selecting this icon opened another, equally user-friendly page detailing the various functions within computer protection, which we could turn off and on individually.
- File Shield: This shield scanned every file either added to or opened on our computer. It made sure we didn’t download any nasty files in the first place, but just in case something did sneak past, it scanned all these files again each and every time we opened them.
- Behavior Shield: This shield monitored all our applications, looking for any suspicious behaviors that might indicate something malicious at work.
- Ransomware Protection: This tool walled off all of our files, ensuring they weren’t vulnerable to attacks from ransomware.
- Network Inspector: Last, but not least, this tool scanned our entire Wi-Fi network and provided useful information about all our connected devices. Turns out we’d forgotten to shut down our Kindle after getting caught up in a mystery one night!
Web and email protection:Web and email protection is designed to make sure we’re safe while we’re surfing and includes two more specific functions.
- Web shield: AVG’s web shield kept us from logging onto any suspicious websites and blocked any potentially unsafe downloads.
- Email shield: Meanwhile, the email shield kept an eye on our emails, making sure we weren’t exposed to unsafe attachments. Web and email protection: Web and email protection is designed to make sure we’re safe while we’re surfing and includes two more specific functions.

At the top of the main page, we discovered a drop-down menu with a couple of more tools, including a data shredder and a quarantine folder. The data shredder allowed us to permanently and irreversibly remove a file, a folder, or an entire disc from our computer. The quarantine folder, on the other hand, provided a safe place to store any suspicious files, completely isolating them from the rest of the system. One of our favorite tools, though, was the Do Not Disturb mode. We gave AVG a list of which programs require our absolute uninterrupted attention: spreadsheets, for example, and solitaire. AVG made sure that when those programs were running full-screen nothing and nobody could bother us. No pop-ups: none. Not even, incidentally, from AVG itself.

Finally, the drop-down menu included a list of other AVG services to check out.

Tip: A behavior shield constantly scans your computer looking for processes that exhibit suspicious behaviors. Once it detects such behaviors, it can block the file, even if the malware itself hasn’t yet been added to the virus database.

Paid Package

In the end, we liked our free experience with AVG so much that we decided to go with its Internet Security package (there is also an Ultimate package). Once we keyed in the activation code, three more functions, located on the right-hand side of the main page, magically lit up as well, including more protection modes:

Hacker attack protection: The three functions here made sure we were safe not merely from random viruses, but also from specific attacks from hackers.
- Enhanced firewall: While the free version of the software offered us some basic protection against hackers, the enhanced firewall looked for more targeted attacks.
- Password protection: This feature kept our saved passwords nice and secure, allowing us to autofill forms when we wanted but only when we wanted.
- Remote access shield: This shield made sure we were impervious to unwanted remote connections.
Privacy protection: We’re sort of rabid about maintaining our privacy, and these functions meant we had no worries on that score.
- Webcam protection: This feature ensured no one could use spyware to access our webcam.
- Sensitive data shield: This shield prevented snooping on our most sensitive documents.
Payment protection: Finally, the paid version of AVG provided complete protection for all our online purchases.
- Fake website shield: As part of maintaining our safety, the fake web shield made certain we weren’t taken in by any fake websites phishing for our credit card data.

We installed the package on 10 different devices; we have a lot of devices, okay? And as a bonus, it came with a VPN, a virtual private network that routes your online surfing through a third party server so that your browsing and even your IP address are shielded from prying eyes. Putting AVG’s Virus Detection to the Test

Any antivirus software is only as good as its ability to do its job: stop viruses. That’s why we took the time and effort to download (but not open!) five files that we knew contained viruses. Of course, we made sure to check out a variety, from adware to Trojan malware. In the end, AVG managed to detect three of the five, a 60 percent success rate. We were alarmed at first, until we discovered that this is actually a pretty standard percentage for antivirus software. We tested over 40 different programs and found only two that managed to catch 100 percent of what we threw at them, believe it or not.

Our Tests

XLSX file: First up, we tested AVG’s prowess with a spreadsheet file, Order.XLSX, a tricky little virus that would have tried to convince us to turn off our AVG protections so it could steal our browser histories, passwords, and email credentials. Only 34 percent of antivirus programs detected this one, so we weren’t terribly surprised that AVG failed as well.
EXE file: Next we checked out whether AVG could spot RsBvabnsg1, a virus that frequently appears in the form of an exe. RsBvabnsg1 is better known as AgentTelsa, a remote access tool (RAT) that allows bad guys to completely take over a computer. Luckily, the majority of programs manage to catch this one, 66 percent, and AVG managed to also.
DOC file: We find doc files to be especially pernicious since we do a lot of writing and files can sort of just blend together. We tested Reservation.doc, and AVG did manage to detect it. This was an impressive result given that only around 36 percent of all programs spotted it.
XLSM file: AVG let us down again on this one, 97655499.xlsm, which usually shows up as an email attachment. Only 35 percent of antivirus software programs managed to detect it though.
XLS file: Finally, we ran a check for BDO-1218.xls, an xls file that about half of antivirus programs manage to find. Here AVG performed well, detecting it with ease.

In the end, here’s how AVG measured up.

Lab Tests

Just to set our minds completely at ease, we also checked out how AVG performed in independent tests run by AV Test.1 In terms of protection, AVG received a six out of 10. Under performance, AVG was rated four out of 10. And in terms of usability, they were awarded five out of 10, which isn’t too shabby given that the industry average is two out of 10. Overall, AVG averaged out to a five out of 10, not stellar, though not at the bottom by any means. We were more excited to discover that when it came to detecting the most recent viruses, malware released over the last month, AVG had a strong 99.8 percent success rate.

AVG’s Available Apps

We downloaded the Windows version of the software, but the AVG homepage offers a Mac version as well. In addition, our software came with extensions for both Chrome and Edge browsers.

In addition to its PC products, AVG also offers mobile apps. The Apple Store offers AVG Mobile Security, which we noticed has a 4.8 rating out of 5. Meanwhile, Google Play offers AVG Antivirus Free and Mobile Security, Photo Vault, which despite its lengthy name is highly rated at 4.7 out of 5.0. We tested Google Play’s version and saw right away why it’s rated so highly. The interface is just as easy to use as the PC version. Also, it doesn’t take up a lot of space, which is good since most of our phone space is taken up with cat pictures.

AVG’s Customer Support

We were pleased to discover that AVG not only offers solid customer support, but it offers a number of different options for support. First, there is a help file integrated into the program itself, which managed to solve most of our basic problems, explaining the software and how to make the most of its capabilities. In addition, AVG offers 24/7 phone support for its products, where we found the representatives to be knowledgeable and friendly. Finally, AVG has an extensive searchable database of community troubleshooting posts and a blog that provides useful tips on their own software and malware protection in general.

We were a little disappointed that there was no live chat online support option, but with all these other options, we never had a problem we couldn’t get an answer for. Even when we made that call at two in the morning just so they’d explain the difference between Smart Scans and Deep Scans, everyone was quite pleasant.

AVG’s Privacy Policy

AVG was recently acquired by Avast,2 and you can read our complete Avast review for more on the company. Recently, Avast, and thus AVG has been thrust into the spotlight due to their privacy policy, which we read ourselves. Certainly it is true that AVG does collect data on its users, something it makes clear in its privacy policy.3 That information includes:

If you’re looking for good basic protection from malware and viruses, AVG’s free app definitely fits the bill. You’ll pay a little more for extra tools and an enhanced firewall, but if you take your computer’s health seriously, AVG is worth the cost.

About AVG

My only complaint about this software is having to pay additional fee for each divice on the same home network. Well there is another and that being there is no details of what the software is doing and no documentation to give details when it notifies if an attack. Or intrusion hack or virus or trojan virus or even details when it warns of a malicious site it just blocked not even why it determined the site is malicious and blocked it.

When I am on the net , I am a CARTOON character.
So if I am Fred Flintstone’s long lost cousin they can have all the info I have. One of my devices I am a old western cowboy and it works flawlessly. I never buy anything without PayPal which keeps me safe and all my info masked on their site , This app also told me I was in danger because I didn’t use the passcode. I am using my devices inside the safety of my home so why would I frustrate myself with this worthless feature. Passcode doesn’t help at all because the harm is on the inside after you open the door and if you are smart enough not too store your passwords inside the device and all the info is faulty you should be safe . Why is the scan button on this app dead ? It doesn’t do anything but give you a report that something is wrong. My device is brand new yet is infected , LOL . If Apple would stop being cowardly and take a stand against these bullying developers who slam us with rotten ad infested apps and other questionable actions then we would be safer. I will never let my kids use a iPad without being supervised for their protection. You would be surprised how many time I had to disapprove of a kids app because they think we are checking and Apple isn’t paying attention! So only common sense can keep us safe on these devices!

Avast AntiVirus, belonging to the same corporate family as AVG offers the most features in the freeware than the other virus protection programs. In terms of malware protection, Kaspersky is a completely robust antivirus, that offers better protection than AVG.

AVG lacks a number of features that can be found in other products such as Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition's webcam protection, Avast's password manager, and Kaspersky Security Cloud Free's on-screen keyboard. However, AVG AntiVirus Free does have a powerful file shredder, that is unique to the product, and useful in removing harmful files from the operating system.

What are the pros and cons of using AVG Anti-Virus free?

AVG offers a number of anti-virus protection features, that are sufficient for the basic personal use computers. AVG is easily customizable, is easily updated, and protects against malware. The paid version adds a firewall to the system and provides even better protection against any malware. The Deep scans and the quicker Computer scans, weed out the malware and point out the possible website sources that are harmful.

However, AVG is slower than its competitors when it comes to virus scans, and the free version is not as robust as other programs (in their free versions). There is also not a 100% detection of virus and malware on the freeware, as compared to a Kaspersky antivirus or a Norton one.

Finally, should one use AVG?

AVG Antivirus Free offers solid protection against malware and viruses for personal computers and covers the basic virus protection needed for safe navigation through the internet. The program does a complete Deep Scan or a quick Computer Scan, to maintain the computer's overall health. Compared to its competitors, AVG is slower in its scans, and does have lesser features than some of the other anti-virus programs. However, it is an easy-to-use application, with an excellent user interface, that is intuitive to navigate through. Overall, this one is worth downloading.

AVG AntiVirus (previously known as AVG, an abbreviation of Anti-Virus Guard) is a line of antivirus software developed by AVG Technologies, a subsidiary of Avast.^[3]^[4] It is available for Windows, macOS and Android.

History

The brand AVG comes from Grisoft's first product, Anti-Virus Guard, launched in 1992 in the Czech Republic. In 1997, the first AVG licenses were sold in Germany and the UK. AVG was introduced in the US in 1998.^[5]

The AVG Free Edition helped raise awareness of the AVG product line.^[6] In 2006, the AVG security package grew to include anti-spyware as AVG Technologies acquired ewido Networks, an anti-spyware group. AVG Technologies acquired Exploit Prevention Labs (XPL) in December 2007 and incorporated that company's LinkScanner safe search and surf technology into the AVG 8.0 security product range released in March 2008. In January 2009, AVG Technologies acquired Sana Security, a developer of identity theft prevention software. This software was incorporated into the AVG security product range in March 2009.^{[citation needed]}

According to AVG Technologies, the company has more than 200 million active users worldwide, including more than 100 million who use their products and services on mobile devices.^[7]

On 7 July 2016, Avast announced an agreement to acquire AVG for $1.3 billion.^[8]

Platform support

LinkScanner includes: Search-Shield – a safe search component that places safety ratings next to each link in Google, Yahoo! and MSN search results; plus Active Surf-Shield – a safe surf component that scans the contents of a web site in real-time to ensure it's safe being opened.^[10] Concerns regarding web analytics have made LinkScanner a controversial component (see "LinkScanner concerns" below).

When AVG 8.0 was first released, its LinkScanner safe search feature was shown to cause an increase in traffic on websites that appear high in search engine results pages. Since LinkScanner disguises the scans as coming from an Internet Explorer 6 browser when it prescans each site listed in the search results, website usage logs showed incorrect and overinflated site visitor statistics. The prescanning of every link in search results also caused websites to transfer more data than usual, resulting in higher bandwidth usage for web site operators and slow performance for users.^[11] AVG initially said that site administrators would be able to filter the LinkScanner traffic out of their site statistics, leaving the problem of excess bandwidth usage still to be solved.^[12] Pay-per-click advertising was not affected by the increase in traffic.^[13]

AVG Online Shield

AVG Online Shield is a feature designed to check files and ensure that they are safe. AVG Online Shield also ensures the safety of exchanging files via instant messengers and VoIP clients.^[14]

In response to complaints, AVG announced that as of 9 July 2008 "Search-Shield will no longer scan each search result online for new exploits, which was causing the spikes that webmasters addressed with us",^[15] releasing a new build on that date that applies a local blacklist, then prefetches and scans only those links clicked on by the user.^[16]

Controversy

As of 2014, there are numerous reports dating back to 2012 that the AVG SafeGuard Toolbar installs itself without the consent of the user, as a side effect of installing other applications. The toolbar program appears to cause significant RAM issues and can be considered an intrusive potentially unwanted program (PUP). Once installed, the AVG toolbar is virtually impossible to remove. The toolbar uninstaller does not function, instead re-installing the add-on if manually removed. Consequently, many discussions and blog posts have described complex procedures for removal of the AVG toolbar, each with very mixed results.^[17]^[18]^[19]^[20]^[21]^[22]

In September 2015, AVG announced that it would start tracking users for profit, analyzing their data for sale to the advertising industry. This measure received criticism from consumers, the press and security industry, as many users intended to use the software in order to protect themselves from spyware and would not expect the functions of spyware to be "hidden" in security software.^[23]

In December 2015, the AVG Web TuneUp Google Chrome extension (automatically installed with AVG AntiVirus) was revealed to contain multiple critical security vulnerabilities.^[24] Most notably, Chrome users' browsing history could be exposed to any website, cookies from any site the user has visited could be read by an attacker, and trivial cross-site scripting (XSS) issues could allow any website to execute arbitrary code (as another domain).

The XSS vulnerability allowed a user's mail from "mail.google.com" to be read by any website, or financial information to be read from the user's online banking site. The AVG team fixed this by only allowing "mysearch.avg.com" and "webtuneup.avg.com" to execute these scripts. Despite this remediation, attackers could leverage any of these attacks if an XSS vulnerability was found on the AVG sites. As of April 2016, Web TuneUp was still not available for download from the AVG website.

A Quick Overview

We ran AVG through its paces on our 2020 Lenovo Thinkpad to see just what it could do. We examined both its free and Internet Security versions, avg antivirus, we studied its privacy policy in-depth, and we considered what programs it offers for other platforms.

AVG includes on-access scanning, which means as soon as we opened the program avg antivirus began scanning and continued to scan in the background as long as it was open. But it also offered the option for on-demand scanning. We went with AVG’s mid-range package, which they call Internet Security, and we were able to protect 10 avg antivirus. Because, after all, what’s the point of protecting our laptop if our tablet and our phone are vulnerable malwarebytes with key attacks?

Downloading the Software

Downloading AVG Antivirus software was straightforward enough. The company’s homepage has a nice bright green link right at the top offering a “Free Download.” Of course, there are links to the paid Mac, avg antivirus, PC, and Mobile versions, but we prefer to try things out before we lay any money down. And to be honest, AVG makes it easy to start with a free plan, which includes a file scanner and a basic firewall against viruses and malware; the download and installation took under a minute, avg antivirus. And once we were convinced that the tools they offered were worth an investment, there was an easy option in the program’s drop-down menu to enter an activation code. We instantly went from Basic to Full protection, which included access to webcam protection, payment protection, and an advanced firewall.

Like a lot of antivirus companies out there, AVG seems always out to convince us that we won’t be completely safe until we’ve purchased enough subscriptions to feel as though our computer is as protected as Fort Knox, avg antivirus. In their case, this comes in the form of an initial scan which found that our computer was “cluttered” and slowed down by 314 performance issues requiring our immediate attention. Of course, the moment we clicked the “Resolve” button, we were taken to a link where we were encouraged to buy more software. The Experience of Using AVG

Like we said before, we took the time to see what came in the free package before we went all in. Below, we outline both experiences.

Free Package

As soon as we opened the software, the main page laid our options out in clear, easy-to-understand terms, avg antivirus. At the bottom of the screen, a button offered us an on-demand Smart Scan. Of course, we pushed that before we bothered checking out the other tools, and to our great relief discovered in just seconds that we were virus-free. We do like to maintain a clean machine. Next to this button, AVG also told us when we ran our last virus scan and exactly how long it had been since our virus database had been updated. Finally, we had many other scanning options. We ran a deep scan, which took just over 34 minutes, and looked at our entire system including storage drives, memory, and rootkits. We also had the option to schedule scans, including recurring scans. And we could see a monthly history of what AVG had managed to uncover.

Computer protection: Computer protection essentially means what it says. AVG kept a constant eye on the health of our computer, avg antivirus, ensuring it was fine now and that it stayed that way. - Web shield: AVG’s web shield kept us from logging onto any suspicious websites and blocked any potentially unsafe downloads.
- Email shield: Meanwhile, the email shield kept an eye on our emails, making sure we weren’t exposed to unsafe attachments. Web and email protection: Web and email protection is designed to make sure we’re safe while we’re surfing and includes two more specific functions.

At the top of the main page, we discovered a drop-down menu with a couple of more tools, including a data shredder and a quarantine folder. The data shredder allowed us to permanently and irreversibly remove a file, a folder, or an entire disc from our computer. The quarantine folder, on the other hand, provided a safe place to store any suspicious files, completely isolating them from the rest of the system. One of our favorite tools, though, was the Do Not Disturb mode. We gave AVG a list of which programs require our absolute uninterrupted attention: spreadsheets, for example, and solitaire. Hacker attack protection: The three functions here made sure we were safe not merely from random viruses, but also from specific attacks from hackers.

- Password protection: This feature kept our saved passwords nice and secure, allowing us to autofill forms when we wanted but only when we wanted.
- Remote access shield: This shield made sure we were impervious to unwanted remote connections.
Privacy protection: We’re sort of avg antivirus about maintaining our avg antivirus, and these functions meant we had no worries on that score.
- Webcam protection: This feature ensured no one could use spyware to access our webcam.
- Sensitive data shield: This shield prevented snooping on our most sensitive documents.
Payment protection: Finally, the paid version of AVG provided complete protection for all our online purchases.
- Fake website shield: As part of maintaining our safety, the fake web shield made certain we weren’t taken in by any fake websites phishing for our credit card data.

We installed the package on 10 different devices; we have a lot of devices, okay? Putting AVG’s Virus Detection to the Test

Our Tests

XLSX file: First up, avg antivirus, we tested AVG’s prowess with a spreadsheet file, Order.XLSX, a tricky little virus that would have tried to convince us to turn off our AVG protections so it could steal our browser histories, passwords, and email credentials. Only 34 percent of antivirus programs detected this one, so we weren’t terribly surprised that AVG failed as well.
EXE file: Next we checked out whether AVG could Internet Download Accelerator 6.17.3.1621 Download RsBvabnsg1, a virus that frequently appears in the form of an exe. RsBvabnsg1 is better known as AgentTelsa, a remote access tool (RAT) that allows bad guys to completely take over a computer. Luckily, the majority of programs manage to catch this one, 66 percent, and AVG managed to also.
DOC file: We find doc files to be avg antivirus pernicious since we do a lot of writing and files can sort of just blend together. We tested Reservation.doc, and AVG did manage to detect it. This was an impressive result given that only around 36 percent of all programs spotted it.
XLSM file: AVG let us down again on this one, 97655499.xlsm, which usually shows up as an email attachment. Only 35 percent of antivirus software programs managed to detect it though.
XLS file: Finally, we ran avg antivirus check for BDO-1218.xls, an xls file that avg antivirus half of antivirus programs manage to find. Here AVG performed well, detecting it with ease.

Lab Tests

Just to set avg antivirus minds completely at ease, we also checked out how AVG performed in independent tests run by AV Test.1 In terms of protection, avg antivirus, AVG received a six out of 10. We tested Google Play’s version and saw right away why it’s rated so highly. The interface is just as easy to use as the PC version, avg antivirus. Also, it doesn’t take up a lot of space, which is good since most of our phone space is taken up with cat pictures.

AVG’s Customer Support

We were pleased to discover that AVG not only offers solid customer support, but it offers a number of different options for support. First, there is a help file integrated into the program itself, which managed to solve most of our basic problems, explaining the software and how to make the most of its capabilities, avg antivirus. About AVG

My only complaint about this software is having to pay additional fee for each divice on the same home network. Well there is another and that being there is no details of what the software is doing and no documentation to give details when it notifies if an attack. Or intrusion hack or virus or trojan virus or even details when it warns of a malicious site it just blocked not even why it determined the site is malicious and blocked it.

This is not needed if you set your devices up correctly!
When I am on the netI am a CARTOON character, avg antivirus.
So if I am Fred Flintstone’s long lost cousin they can have all the info I have. One of my devices I am a old western cowboy and it works flawlessly. I never buy anything without PayPal which keeps me safe and all my info masked on their siteThis app also told me I was in danger because I didn’t use the passcode. I am using my devices inside the safety of my home so why would I frustrate myself with this worthless feature. Passcode doesn’t help at all because the harm is on the inside after you open the door and if you are smart enough not too store your passwords inside the device and all the info is faulty you should be safe. Why is the scan button on this app dead ? It doesn’t do anything but give you a report that something is wrong. My device is brand new yet is infectedLOL. If Apple would stop being cowardly and take a stand against these bullying developers who slam us with rotten ad infested apps and other questionable actions then we would be safer. I will never let my kids use a iPad without being supervised for their protection. You would be surprised how many time I had to disapprove of a kids app because they think avg antivirus are checking and Apple isn’t paying attention! So only common sense can keep us safe on these devices!
