What’s New in Photoshop CC 2014

Adobe has added some incredibly useful new features to Photoshop CC 2014, especially where productivity is concerned. Graphic designers will be especially pleased with all the new features and timesaving goodies, although there’s also a lot of good stuff for photographers, too.

Perhaps the first thing you’ll notice is that Adobe redesigned most of the program’s dialog boxes to accommodate Retina displays (Apple’s super-high resolution monitors, called HiDPI on PCs), so they’re noticeably shorter and wider (they’re also a darker gray and the buttons are square, so they look more Windows-like than Mac-like in their design).

Here’s a quick overview of all the new stuff (don’t worry if you don’t yet understand some of the terms used here—you’ll learn them as you read through this book):

  • New blur filters. This version of Photoshop CC sports two additions to the Blur Gallery family of filters that let you simulate motion in a photo that doesn’t have any (or that doesn’t have enough). The Path Blur filter lets you create the appearance of motion along a path that you draw—it can be straight or riddled with curves—and then fine-tune the blur’s direction, angle, speed, and even how much blurring occurs at the path’s start and end points. And the Spin Blur filter lets you put an incredibly realistic spin on any object by using a simple set of on-image controls. Both filters let you customize how blurry the object appears.

  • Typekit access, font searches, and instant font previews. One of the great benefits of having a subscription to Adobe’s Creative Cloud service (see the box on Meet the Creative Cloud) that it gives you access to hundreds of fonts via the online font service Typekit (www.Typekit.com). In this version of the program, you can get to these fonts right from Photoshop’s font family menu and—once you install them (which is incredibly easy)—you can use them in any program on your machine that sports a font menu. Also new in the realm of text is the ability to search all your installed fonts by typing part of a font’s name (or attribute) into the font family menu. And when a type layer is active, you can point to any font in the font family menu and Photoshop previews your existing text in that font, right there in your document.

  • Better smart guides. These incredible layer alignment helpers are now turned on automatically, and now show you a lot more info about the spacing in your document. When you have the Move or Path Selection tool active, you can ⌘-click (Ctrl-click on a PC), and then point anywhere in your document to see distance measurements between the currently active layer’s content and everything else in the document (even its edge). By Option-dragging (Alt-dragging) an object, you can both duplicate that layer and see the distance between the duplicate and the original object as you drag.

  • Sync layer comps and access them in smart objects. Layer comps let you create multiple versions of an image or design without having to duplicate the document. New in this version of the program, you can update layer comps by syncing them with the layers you updated (a big timesaver when you make a global change to your project), plus you can access a document’s layer comps after you’ve placed it into another document as a smart object—without opening (editing) the smart object.

  • Linked smart objects. Instead of embedding smart object content into your documents, you can now link then to external content. This is great news for both designers and photographers who routinely combine large files into a single document. You can now also convert an embedded smart object into a linked one, or vice-versa. The Properties panel, Info panel, and status bar can all display handy info about linked smart objects, as well as help you fix any broken links (caused by renaming or moving the linked file on your hard drive) and update any content that you changed while the Photoshop document that contains it was closed. Finally, the new Package command copies the Photoshop document and all its linked content so you can easily hand the whole shebang off to someone else.

  • Select in-focus areas with Focus Area. This new command summons a dialog box that automatically selects the in-focus parts of an image. It does a great job if the photo has a strong focal point and a blurry background, and the dialog box includes a couple of sliders and brushes that you can use to fine-tune the selection. You can also send the selection straight over to the Refine Edge dialog box for more tweaking.

  • Better color blending with content-aware tools. All of Photoshop’s content-aware tools now work faster and do a better job of blending colors, especially when you use them in an area that’s a gradient (think skies, water, and so on). These days, instead of having adaptation presets for the Patch and Content-Aware Move tools, you get a Structure and a Color field that let you enter precise settings for more realistic blending. Adobe also updated the Fill command’s Content-Aware option to perform better blending, and it now includes a Color Adaptation checkbox.

  • Editable scripted patterns. Scripted patterns are a fantastic way to create new textures and backgrounds, although editing the JavaScript that powers ’em was a real pain. Now, choosing one of the eight built-in scripts summons a dialog box that lets you easily customize the pattern’s density, size, and color variations. You can apply scripted patterns to paths, too, as well as save your customizations as handy presets that you can use again later.

  • Perspective warp. This command lets you change the perspective of an image, but only in certain areas that you specify. By drawing a grid atop your image, you can warp that area to make stuff like buildings and flat surfaces look correct (in other words, straight instead of angled).

  • Editable masks for Camera Raw’s Graduated and Radial filters. Camera Raw’s Graduated and Radial filters are perfect for applying gradual changes to a photo in a linear or circular fashion (respectively). And you can now edit the masks made by both filters by using a brush. (Camera Raw is discussed throughout this book, but the bulk of the coverage is in Chapter 9.)

  • Export web graphics with Generator. To the delight of web designers worldwide, the new Generator feature lets you instantly export web graphics that you’ve designed in Photoshop—and even create subfolders to organize them—just by using certain layer names. You’ve got to try this feature to believe it.

  • 3D printing. You can now print 3D objects on a local 3D printer or send your file off to a 3D-printing service from inside Photoshop. The print preview that you get is incredible and even shows you the areas Photoshop filled in to make the object solid enough to print. If you go the printing-service route, the preview even estimates how much the project will cost. Chapter 21 helps you get started working in the increasingly popular realm of 3D.

There are also tons of little changes in Photoshop CC 2014, the direct result of Adobe’s customer-feedback initiative called Just Do It (JDI). Here’s a list: You can unlock a background layer by single-clicking its padlock icon (hooray!); you can turn the Color panel into a Color Picker that’s always open; you no longer have to unlock a background layer to add a vector-based layer mask to it; you can create gradients with a single color stop; and the process for syncing your settings to the Creative Cloud is simpler and now includes workspaces, keyboard shortcuts, and menu customizations. You can also export 3D color lookup tables for use in Adobe’s pro-level video editing apps; and the Copy CSS command now understands inner-shadow layer styles. When using the Liquify filter, you can pin the image’s edges down so they don’t get warped. The Brushes panel displays the last 30 brushes you used at the top of its panel for quick access, and uses a special highlight color to let you know when you’ve modified a brush’s settings. There’s also an Experimental Feature Manager tucked inside Photoshop’s preferences that lets you access “not yet ready for prime time” features that Adobe periodically releases.

Unfortunately, Adobe removed some useful panels because they were Flash based, including the Mini Bridge, Kuler, and Adobe Exchange panels (though, as Other Color Scheme–Generating Tools explains, you can download Kuler from the Adobe Add-On website as an HTML-based panel). The Oil Paint filter also went the way of the dodo bird in this version due to outdated code (easy come, easy go!).

Begin by opening Adobe Photoshop CC 2014. On a PC, click Windows button at the bottom left corner > Programs > Adobe > Photoshop CS6, or click on the shortcut on the desktop. This will require some advanced planning. For example, if your inal output will be a brochure, you may need to set up your document to be horizontal and double-sided. To create a new document, click File > New. This will open the Document Setup dialog box (Figure 2). 3 Figure 2. Document Setup dialog box Here you will be able to name your ile, set up the correct page size and orientation for your document. Options include, but are not limited to: Page Size and Orientation Change the page size by typing in new values for width and height. Page size represents the inal size you want after bleeds or trimming other marks outside the page. In the Preset dropdown menu you can ind such common compatibilties as Photo, Web, ect. Typing in exact values for Height and Width gives you more control over the size and orientation of your page. Resolution Resolution is the number of pixels on a printed area of an image. The higher the resolution, the more pixels there are on the page, the better the quality of the image. However, high resolution increases the size of the ile. The standard recommended resolution for printed images is 150-300, for Web images it is 72. Color Mode Choose a color mode that will best it your project. For example, when making a graphic for a web site, choose RGB. When making an image for print choose CMYK. Background Contents Choose the background: white, color or transparent. When you have entered all of your document settings, click Ok. Opening an image from a disk If the image you have is saved on a disk or to the computer, select File > Open, and then navigate to the disk drive/ile where your image is saved. Choose the image ile and click Open. At this point, you may want to save your image under a different name so that you can always have the original to fall back on in case of a mistake. To save your ile, select File > Save As and type in the new name of the ile in the dialogue box. 4 2. Interface Layout PALLETES Figure 3. This is the layout of Adobe Photoshop interface. Menu Bar If you look at the top of the screen you will see the Menu bar (Figure 3), which contains all the main functions of Photoshop, such as File, Edit, Image, Layer, Type, Select, Filter, Analysis, 3D,View, Window, and Help. Toolbar Most of the major tools are located in the Toolbar for easy access. The Image The image will appear in its own window once you open a ile. Image Name The name of any image that you open will be at the top of the image window as shown above. Palettes Palettes contain functions that help you monitor and modify images. By default, palettes are stacked together in groups. These are the palettes that are usually visible: Color, Adjustments and Layers. If none of the palettes are visible, go to Window in the Menu bar and choose the palettes you need. 5 3. Palettes Below is the description of the most commonly used palettes in Adobe Photoshop CS6. Palettes used for more advanced image editing will be covered in the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Tutorial - Intermediate. Color, Swatches, Style The Color palette (Figure 4) displays the current foreground and background colors and RGB values for these colors.You can use the sliders to change the foreground and background colors in different color modes.You can also choose a color from the spectrum of colors displayed in the color ramp at the bottom of the palette. Figure 4. Color palette In the Swatches palette (Figure 5) you can choose a foreground or background color and add a customized color to the library. Figure 5. Swatches palette The Styles palette (Figure 6) allows you to view, select, and apply preset layer styles. By default, a preset style replaces the current layer style.You can use the styles in the palette or add your own using the Create New Style icon. Figure 6. Styles palette 6 History The History palette (Figure 7) stores and displays each action performed allowing you jump to any recent stage of the image alteration. The alterations should be created during the current working session. After saving or closing the document, the History palette clears all the contents. Each time you apply a change to an image, the new state of that image is added to the palette. It is important to know that once you click on any of the previ- ous stages, all the changes that were made after it will be lost. Figure 7. History palette Adjustments The Adjustment layers palette give you the ability to apply an effect to a group of layers in Photoshop, and then you can edit that effect later, while preserving the original layers. Figure 8. Adjustments palette 7 Layers Layers let you organize your work into distinct levels that can be edited and viewed as individual units. Every Photoshop CS6 document contains at least one layer. Creating multiple layers lets you easily control how your artwork is printed, displayed, and edited.You will use the Layers palette (Figure 9) often while creating a docu- ment, so it is crucial to understand what it does and how to use it. A) Layer Visibility -The eye shows that the selected layer is visible. Click on or off to see or to hide a layer. B) Layer Locking Options -Click the checkered square icon to lock Transparency, click the brush icon to lock the Image, click the arrow icon to lock the Position, and click the lock icon to lock all options. C) Layer Blending Mode -Deines how the layer’s pixels blend with underlying pixels in the image. By choosing a particular blending mode from the drop-down menu you can create a variety of special effects. D) Fill -By typing in a value or dragging the slider you can specify the transparency. E) Opacity -By typing in a value or dragging the slider, you can specify the transparency of the entire layer. Figure 9. Layer palette F) Layer Lock -The icon shows when the layer is locked and disappears when it is unlocked. Double-click the icon to unlock the layer. G) Layer Options Menu -Click the black triangle to display the following options: New Layer, Duplicate Layer, Delete Layer, Layer Properties, etc. Some of the options are presented as icons at the bottom of the Layers palette. H) Link Layers – Can be used to link layers together. I) Layer Styles -If a layer has a style, an “F” icon shows at the bottom of the Layers palette. Click the little black triangle to see style options. 8 J) Layer Mask -Allows you to hide certain parts of the layer, which can then be revealed by using the paintbrush and the white paint color to expose portions of the layer. K) Layer Set -This option helps to organize images with multiple layers. Click the icon to create a folder for several layers. L) Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer -Have the same opacity and blending mode options as image layers and can be rearranged, deleted, hidden and duplicated in the same manner as image layers. Click the icon and select an option to create a new ill or adjustment layer. M) Create New Layer -Click this icon to create a new layer. N) Delete Layer -To delete a layer, select a layer in the Layers palette and drag it to the trash can icon, or select a layer and click the icon. 4. Toolbox If you used other Adobe products, such as Illustrator or InDesign, you should be familiar with the toolbox in Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 as it shares some of the tools from these applications. If you are a new user of Adobe products, you should keep in mind that you might not need to use all of the tools. In this tutorial, only the basic tools will be discussed in-depth. Some tools in the toolbar have additional “hidden” tools. These tools have small black triangles in the right- hand corner. Selection Tools Move Used to select and move objects on the page. Click the tool button, then click on any object on the page you wish to move. Selects an object by drawing a rectangle or an ellipse around it. Marquee Click the tool button, choose a rectangular or an elliptical marquee. Drag the marquee over the area of the image you wish to select. Lasso Selects an object by drawing a freehand border around it. Click the tool button, drag to draw a freehand border around the are of the image you wish to select. Magic Wand Selects all objects in a document with the same or similar ill color, stroke weight, stroke color, opacity or blending mode. By specifying the color range or tolerance, you can control what the Magic Wand tool selects. Crop Click the tool button, then click and drag the tool over the part of the image that you want to keep. Resize the selected area dragging the squares at the sides and corners. Click the Return/Enter key when your crop box is sized correctly. You can also accept it with the check box in the top toolbar. Eye Dropper Takes color samples from colors on the page and displays them in the Color Boxes. Select the tool, click on the color in the image you wish to sample. The Color Box will display this color. To ill a shape or text, select them immediately after illing the dropper. 10 6. Alteration Tools Healing Brush Corrects small blemishes in scanned photos. Select the tool, hold down the ALT key and left-click on the base color you need to heal. Then left-click over the blemish. Brush Draws brush strokes of different thicknesses and colors. Select the tool. Then click on the selected area, drag to draw lines. Use the Options bar to change the brush, mode, opacity and low. Clone Stamp Takes a sample of an image and applies over another image, or a part of the same image. Select the tool. Hold down the ALT key and left-click on a certain point of the document where you want to start your copy point. Then, put your mouse over whatever part of the new document you want the picture to go to. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse across the page to copy the picture. Art History Brush Paints over an image using the source data from a speciied history state or snapshot. Select the tool, specify the brush, blending mode, opacity, style, area and tolerance. Eraser Removes part of an existing path or stroke.You can use the Erase tool on paths. Text can only be erased when rasterized. Select the tool, click on the part of the image you wish to erase. Drag to erase pixels. Paint Bucket Applies a color ill to a selected part of the image or to an entire layer. Select a layer you wish to apply the paint bucket to, click the tool button, click on the starting point, and click the area you wish to ill. Blurs the sharp edges of an image. Blur Select an area where you wish to apply the tool. Click the tool button and choose the brush, mode, and strength. Drag the brush along the edges. 11 7. Drawing and Selection Tools Path Selection Selects paths and path segments. Select the tool, click anywhere on the path. Type Types text on a page. Every time you click the Type Tool on a new portion of the page, a new layer will be created. Select the type tool, click on the page and begin to type.You can specify the font and size in the Options bar.You can also resize and transform the text box by dragging the squares at the sides and corners. Use the Move Tool to move the text on the page. Pen Draws smooth-edged paths. Select the tool, click on the page and drag to draw a path. Click and drag the anchor points to modify the path. Line Shape Draws a straight line. Other shapes that are hidden in this tool are: Rounded Rectangle Tool, Ellipse Tool, Polygon Tool, Line Tool, and Custom Shape Tool. Select the tool, click and drag on the page to draw a line. 8. Additional Tools Hand Allows you to move around within the image. Select the tool, click on the spot on the page, hold the mouse button down, drag to move in the area. Magnify Magniies or reduces the display of any area in your image window. Select the tool, choose Zoom In or Zoom Out in the Options bar, click on the area of the image you wish to magnify or reduce. 12 9. Color Boxes and Modes The foreground color appears in the upper color selection box and represents a color that is currently active. The background color appears in the lower box and represents an inactive color. Color Boxes 1. To change the foreground color, click the upper color selection box in the Toolbox. 2. To change the background color, click the lower color selection box in the Toolbox. 3. To reverse the foreground and background colors, click the Switch Colors icon (the arrow) to the right hand corner of the boxes.. 4. To restore the default foreground and background colors, click the Default Colors icon (the little black and white boxes) to the left hand corner of the boxes. Note: If you are using the Gradient Tool, the currently selected foreground and background colors will be the default colors of the gradient. 10. Cropping Cropping is one of the most basic editing techniques that can improve your images. Cropping helps to bring out the most important features in your image and focus the viewers’ attention on these features. Cropping also allows you to make your image a standard photo size. There are several ways to crop images in Adobe Photoshop: 1. Cropping with the Crop Tool 2. Cropping to a speciic size 3. Cropping with the Marquee Tool Cropping with the Crop Tool The Crop Tool allows you to make a precise selection of an image you wish to edit. To crop with the Crop Tool, follow these steps: 1. Open the image you wish to crop (see Getting Started for detailed instructions). 2. Select the Crop Tool from the Toolbox (see Selection Tools for location and description). 3. It will automatically select your entire image. Drag the edges to it the dimensions you desire. (See Figure 11). 13 Figure 11. Cropping border 4. Resize the border by dragging the squares at the sides and corners untill you are satisied with the way your image looks. 5. Once you are completely satisied with your cropped image, press Enter. NOTE: You can also rotate your cropping border. Move the cursor outside the border, you will see how it turns into a double-headed arrow (Figure 12). Drag the arrows in the directions you wish to rotate your selec- tion. 14 Figure 12. Rotating the cropping border Cropping to a speciic size If you wish to print your digital photos or other images on standard size photo paper, you will have to crop your images to a speciic size, such as 8x10. To crop an image to a speciic size, do the following: 1. Open the image you wish to crop. 2. Select the Crop Tool from the Toolbox. 3. In the Options bar, specify the values for Width and Height (Figure 13). Figure 13. Crop Tool Options bar 4. Click in your image and drag the cropping border. Notice that the border is constrained.You cannot make it wider or longer than the speciied values (Figure 14). For example, if you entered 8 for Width and 10 for Height, whatever size you make the border, the area within it will it on an 8x10 photo. Figure 14. Cropping to a speciic size 5. Once you are completely satisied with your cropped image, press Enter. 15 Cropping with the Marquee Tool If you are in a hurry and need just a simple crop, you can use the Marquee Tool and a menu command. To crop with the Marquee Tool, follow the steps below: 1. Open the image you wish to crop. 2. Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the Toolbox (see Selection Tools). 3. Click and drag the mouse to draw a marquee around the area you wish to crop (Figure 15). Figure 15. Drawing a marquee 4. In the main menu, go to Image > Crop (Figure 16). Resizing Resizing in Photoshop can help you print your images in standard photo sizes, resize and preserve the high quality of digital photos, and enlarge small images to a poster size. Resizing to a speciic size To resize your image to a preset size, follow the steps below: 1. In the main menu, go to File > New. 2. In the New dialog box, click on the Preset dropdown menu.You will see several preset sizes, such as 2x3, 4x6 and 5x7. Remember that 72 ppi is ine for online images, but a ppi of 150-300 is better for printed images. (Figure 17). Figure 17. Preset size in the New dialog box 3. Choose the size that you wish and click OK. NOTE: All the preset sizes are in portrait orientation. If you wish to resize an image with the landscape ori- entation, you need to create your own preset. To create your own size, do the following: 1. Type in the values for Width and Height, for example 7x5. 2. Type in your desired resolution (150 ppi for high quality prints, and 72 ppi is good for web images). 3. Click the Save Preset button 17 Resizing digital photos Digital photos usually have large dimensions but low resolution, 72 ppi, which affects their quality when their size is decreased or increased. When printed, the photos with the changed size will look pixilated. To resize the digital photos without loosing the quality, follow these steps: 1. Open the digital photo you wish to resize. 2. In the main menu, go to View > Rulers.You will see the dimension of your photo (Figure 18). Figure 18. Dimensions of a digital photo 3. In the main menu, go to Image > Image Size. 4. In the Image Size dialog box, uncheck the Resample Image box (Figure 19). Type in your desired resolution (anything between 150 and 300 ppi). The photo is now 3.208 x 3.083 inches. Figure 19. Changing resolution 18 Enlarging If you want to make your digital photo into a poster size image, you can do it in the Image Size dialog box. However, just increasing the dimensions will make the image appear blurry and pixilated. To enlarge the image without losing the quality, follow these steps: 1. Open the digital image you wish to enlarge. 2. In the main menu, go to Image > Image Size. 3. In the Image Size dialog box, make sure the Resample Image box is checked and choose Bicubic Smoother from the dropdown box (Figure 20). NOTE: If the Resampling box is unchecked, the dropdown menu is inaccessible. Always be sure to have it checked. Figure 20. Increasing the size by 10 percent 4. Change the Width and Height measurements to Percent. Type in 110. This will increase the size of the image by 10 percent (Figure 20). 5. Continue enlarging by 10 percent untill you are satisied with the size. 19 12. Correcting Digital cameras tend to cause various problems, such as “red eye” or “hot spots”, if you use lash, or they are underexposed if you don’t. In Photoshop, you can correct these problems, as well as adjust the overall color of your digital photo. Red Eye Removal The digital camera lash is located right above the lens, which causes the “red-eye”; however, you can ix your photos easily in Photoshop. To remove the “red eye”, follow the steps below: 1. Open a photo you wish to correct. 2. Select the Zoom Tool from the Toolbox. Click and drag a rectangle around the eye (Figure 21). Figure 21. Red eye zoomed in 3. Make sure your default Foreground and Background colors are black and white. 4. Click and hold on the little black triangle of the Healing Brush Tool button and select the Red Eye Tool (Figure 22). Figure 22. Red Eye Tool 20 5. Click on the red part of the eye and paint, holding down the mouse button.You will see how the red will disappear (Figure 23). Figure 23. Red eye corrected Hot Spot Removal Using a lash can also cause shiny areas on peoples’ faces or the lash to relect on shiny surfaces. To correct this problem, follow the steps below: 1. Open the photo you wish to correct. 2. Select the Clone Stamp Tool from the Toolbox. 3. In the Options bar, change the Blend Mode from Normal to Darken (Figure 24). Figure 24. Setting the options for the Clone Stamp Tool 4. Set the Opacity to 50 percent. 5. Choose a soft-edged brush, set the diameter to 40 or 50. 6. Hold down the Shift key and click in the clean area (without “hot spots”) to get a sample of color (Figure 25). Figure 25. Blemishes 7. Paint over the “hot spot”, the light area will gradually darken (Figure 26). Figure 26. Corrected image 21 Adding Flash If you took pictures indoors without a lash, they will turn out underexposed and dark. To ix underexposed photos, follow these steps: 1. Open a digital photo you wish to correct (Figure 27). Figure 27. Underexposed photo 2. In the main menu, go to Layers > Duplicate Layer. In the next window, name the layer Layer 1. 3. Make sure Layer 1 is selected in the Layers palette. Select Image from the main menu, select Adjustments and select Exposure (Figure 28). Select the amount of exposure. The whole image will lighten. Corrected photo Color Adjustment Color adjustment options in Photoshop CS6 can help you to make your digital photos look more natural. To color correct your images, follow these steps: 1. Open the image you wish to correct. 2. In the main menu, go to Image > Adjustments > Levels.You will see a dialog box displaying a diagram of the colors in your image (Figure 30). The black triangle is for shadows, the gray is for midtones, the white is for highlights. In the Channels dropdown menu, you can choose between RGB. These indicate whether your changes effect all the colors, or just one (red, green, or blue). Figure 30. Levels dialog box 23 3. Make sure the Preview box is checked off. Choose the channel you wish to change and drag the triangles. Dragging the black triangle to the right will make the shadows in your photo darker. Dragging the white triangle to the left will make the higlights in your photo lighter. Dragging the gray triangle to the left will make the midtones in your photo lighter, and dragging it to the right will make the midtones darker. You will be able to see the changes in your image. Figure 31 shows a photo which is underexposed. By correcting the highlights and making the image lighter, we are able to make the photo appear much brighter (Figure 32). Figure 31. Underexposed photo Figure 32. Corrected photo 24 13. Saving Remember to save your work often. Saving frequently lessens the risk of losing the work you have been doing. To save your Photoshop document, do the following: 1. Click File > Save As. 2. Navigate to the place you would like your document to be saved by using the drop down menu and the navigation window. 3. Enter the name of your document in the Save As text ield. 4. Choose a format to save your project in from the Format drop-down menu (Figure 33) Figure 33. Saving a document 5. Click the Save button in the bottom right corner of the dialogue box. 6. Check to make sure that your document is saved in the place you intended. NOTE: If you save your ile as PSD (default Photoshop saving format) your layers will be preserved, but the ile size will be large. If you save your ile as JPEG (a common image format) your layers will be lattened and become one layer, and the ile size will be signiicantly smaller. 25

What’s New in Photoshop CC 2014

Adobe has added some incredibly useful new features to Photoshop CC 2014, especially where productivity is concerned. Graphic designers will be especially pleased with all the new features and timesaving goodies, although there’s also a lot of good stuff for photographers, too.

This version of Photoshop CC sports two additions to the Blur Gallery family of filters that let you simulate motion in a photo that doesn’t have any (or that doesn’t have enough). The Path Blur filter lets you create the appearance of motion along a path that you draw—it can be straight or riddled with curves—and then fine-tune the blur’s direction, angle, speed, and even how much blurring occurs at the path’s start and end points. And the Spin Blur filter lets you put an incredibly realistic spin on any object by using a simple set of on-image controls. Both filters let you customize how blurry the object appears.

  • Typekit access, font searches, adobe photoshop cc 2014 download, and instant font previews. One of the great benefits of having a subscription to Adobe’s Creative Cloud service (see the box on Meet the Creative Cloud) that it gives you access to hundreds of fonts via the online font service Typekit (www.Typekit.com). In this version of the program, adobe photoshop cc 2014 download, you can get to these fonts right from Photoshop’s font family menu and—once you install them (which is incredibly easy)—you can use them in any program on your machine that sports a font menu. Also new in the realm of text is the ability to search all your installed fonts by typing part of a font’s name (or attribute) into the font family menu. And when a type layer is active, you can point to any font in the font family menu and Photoshop previews your existing text in that font, right there in your document.

  • Better smart guides. These incredible layer alignment helpers are now turned on automatically, and now show you a lot more info about the spacing in your document. When you have the Move or Path Selection tool active, you can ⌘-click (Ctrl-click on a PC), and then point anywhere in your document to see distance measurements between the currently active layer’s content and everything else in the document (even its edge). By Option-dragging (Alt-dragging) an object, you can both duplicate that layer and see the distance between the duplicate and the original object as you drag.

  • Sync layer comps and access them in smart objects. Layer comps let you create multiple versions of an image or design without having to duplicate the document. New in this version of the program, you can update layer comps by syncing them with the layers you updated (a big timesaver when you make a global change to your project), plus you can access a document’s layer comps after you’ve placed it into another document adobe photoshop cc 2014 download a smart object—without opening (editing) the smart object.

  • Linked smart objects. Instead of embedding smart object content into your documents, you can now link then to external content. This is great news for both designers and photographers who routinely combine large files into a single document. You can now also convert an embedded smart object into a linked one, or vice-versa. The Properties panel, Info panel, and status bar can all display handy info about linked smart objects, as well as help you fix any broken links (caused by renaming or moving the linked file on your hard drive) and update any content that you changed while the Photoshop document that contains it was closed. Finally, the new Package command copies the Photoshop document and all its linked content so you can easily hand the whole shebang off to someone else.

  • Select in-focus areas with Focus Area. This new command summons a dialog box that automatically selects Print2CAD Keygen in-focus parts of an image. It does a great job if the photo has a strong focal point and a blurry background, and the dialog box includes a couple of sliders and brushes that you can use to fine-tune the selection. You can also send the selection straight over to the Refine Edge dialog box for more tweaking.

  • Better color blending with content-aware tools. All of Photoshop’s content-aware tools now work faster and do a better job of blending colors, especially when you use them in an area that’s a gradient (think skies, water, and so on).   • Editable scripted patterns. Scripted patterns are a fantastic way to create new textures and backgrounds, although editing the JavaScript that powers ’em was a real pain. Now, choosing one of the eight built-in scripts summons a dialog box that lets you easily customize the pattern’s density, size, and color variations. You can apply scripted patterns to paths, too, as well as save your customizations as handy presets that you can use again later.

  • Perspective warp. This command lets you change the perspective of an image, but only in certain areas that you specify. By drawing a grid atop your image, you can warp that area to make stuff like buildings and flat surfaces look correct (in other words, straight instead of angled).

  • Editable masks for Camera Raw’s Graduated and Radial filters. Camera Raw’s Graduated and Radial filters are perfect for applying gradual changes to a photo in a linear or circular fashion (respectively). And you can now edit the masks made by both filters by using a brush. (Camera Raw is discussed throughout this book, but the bulk of the coverage is in Chapter 9.)

  • Export web graphics with Generator. To the delight of web designers worldwide, the new Generator feature lets you instantly export web graphics that you’ve designed in Photoshop—and even create subfolders to organize them—just by using certain layer names. You’ve got to try this feature to believe it.

  • 3D printing. You can now print 3D objects on a local 3D printer or send your file off to a 3D-printing service from inside Photoshop, adobe photoshop cc 2014 download. The print preview that you get is incredible and even shows you the areas Photoshop filled in to make the object solid enough to print, adobe photoshop cc 2014 download. If you go the printing-service route, the preview even estimates how much the project will cost. Chapter 21 helps you get started working in the increasingly popular realm of 3D.

There are also tons of little changes in Photoshop CC 2014, the direct result of Adobe’s customer-feedback initiative called Just Do It (JDI), adobe photoshop cc 2014 download. Here’s a list: You can unlock a background layer by single-clicking its padlock icon (hooray!); you can turn the Color panel into a Color Picker that’s always open; you no longer have to unlock a background layer to add a vector-based layer mask to it; you can create gradients with a single color stop; and the process for syncing your settings to the Creative Cloud is simpler and now includes workspaces, keyboard shortcuts, and menu customizations. You can also export 3D color lookup tables for use in Adobe’s pro-level video editing apps; and the Copy CSS command now understands inner-shadow layer styles. When using the Liquify filter, you can pin the image’s edges down so they don’t get warped. The Brushes panel displays the last 30 brushes you used at the top of its panel for quick access, and uses a special highlight color to let you know when you’ve modified a brush’s settings. There’s also an Experimental Feature Manager tucked inside Photoshop’s preferences that lets you access “not yet ready for prime time” features that Adobe periodically releases.

Unfortunately, Adobe removed some useful panels because they were Flash based, including the Mini Bridge, Kuler, and Adobe Exchange panels (though, adobe photoshop cc 2014 download, as Other Color Scheme–Generating Tools explains, you can download Kuler from the Adobe Add-On website as an HTML-based panel). Enhanced in this release of Photoshop CC

You can now share libraries with collaborators from within Photoshop. Collaborators must have an Adobe ID. If they don't already have an Adobe ID, they can create one when they accept the invitation to collaborate.

Follow these steps to share a library:

  1. In the Libraries panel, select a library from the pop-up menu.
  2. Open the flyout menu and choose Collaborate.
  3. In the browser page that opens up, provide email addresses and an optional message for one or more collaborators with whom you want to share the library.
  4. Click Invite to send out the collaboration invites.

Collaborators receive an email invitation. Existing Creative Cloud members also receive a notification via the Creative Cloud desktop app and website.

Enhanced in this release of Photoshop CC

  • Assets are now clipped to document bounds by default. Photoshop Generator has also been updated to use this behavior by default.
  • When you group layers in the Layer panel, the group is now listed correctly in the Extract Assets dialog. This improvement comes handy when you want to create assets from composite layers.
  • Smart objects are now rendered with higher fidelity when an SVG asset is extracted for 2x or 3x versions.
  • Transformed shapes and text retain their transformations when they're exported as SVG assets.
  • You no longer require a workaround to use Extract Assets if you're using proxies to redirect localhost queries.
  • Previews of assets no longer fail because of invalid, incorrect, or duplicate layer syntax.

Creative Cloud Libraries is a powerful new feature that lets you create, categorize, and store your favorite colors, brushes, text styles, graphics, and vector images in one easily accessible place. Then you can access them anywhere: Assets you create under the same Adobe ID will be visible across different computers—in a variety of applications like Photoshop CC—wherever you sign in.  

Select Window > Library to open the Library panel.

New in this release of Photoshop CC

The 2014.2 release of Photoshop CC introduces Extract Assets, a brand new user interface that lets you easily extract optimized image assets from layers and save them to various formats and resolutions, including SVG, JPG, PNG, or GIF. Using the simple visual Extract Assets interface built on top of Adobe Generator, you may extract content either on-demand or in real-time with auto-updated extractions tailored to your workflow.

This feature is particularly useful for web and screen designers who frequently create assets in multiple resolutions for use in websites and mobile apps.

Select File > Extract Assets.

Support for rigged COLLADA files

Photoshop now supports animation on rigged COLLADA files. You can import and scrub the timeline for these files. Do the following:

  1. Open the rigged COLLADA file in Photoshop.
  2. Select Window > Timeline.
  3. Scrub to a desired position on the timeline.

Import and export 3D PDF files

Photoshop now lets you export and import 3D PDF files in the U3D format.

Export: In Photoshop, open a 3D file and then select 3D > Export 3D Layer. Now, follow the onscreen instructions.

You can use the 3D PDF export functionality in conjunction with rigged COLLADA file support. Scrub to the frame you'd like to export in the animated file and then export it as PDF or in another format.

Import: Photoshop lets you open 3D PDF files created in Acrobat or Photoshop.

  1. Open the 3D PDF file in Photoshop.
  2. Select the 3D option in the Import PDF dialog.
  1. Click OK. Follow any further onscreen instructions.

Support for Windows touch devices

Photoshop CC now supports Windows 8.1 touch devices like the Microsoft Surface Pro, so you can use pinch, zoom, pan, and rotate.  

In Photoshop, two-finger touch gestures are used to control the location, rotation, and scaling of the Image > Canvas view. Users may alternate between touch view control and other interactions using the mouse or stylus, but touch may not be used simultaneously with other input. Touch control is convenient when painting on large touchscreen monitors, which are difficult to rotate physically, and on tablets to avoid constantly shifting the device.

The menu font size in this release of Photoshop is determined by the operating system settings. For example, on Windows 8.1, you can adjust the menu font size by following the steps in the “Make text and other items on the desktop larger” section of this Microsoft Help topic.

The August 2014 update to Photoshop CC is focused on 3D printing and 3D imaging enhancements.

Enhanced in this release of Photoshop CC

3D printing enhancements in this release include several workflow improvements, including higher fidelity mesh repair functionality and the ability to load assemblies. Also, previews in this release are more accurate than ever before.

Pack objects on the ground plane

Using the Pack Objects On the Ground Plane feature, you can easily arrange multiple objects for printing on the same build plate.

In earlier versions of Photoshop CC, for printing multiple objects, you'd need to manually position each object for printing, adobe photoshop cc 2014 download. In this update to the Photoshop CC 2014 release, you can simply select the models in the 3D Panel and then choose 3D > Pack Objects On Ground Plane.

Switch between preview modes

You can now disable ray trace preview in the 3D Print Settings dialog. The preview defaults to the OpenGL preview mode if you disable ray trace preview.

Ray trace previews now more accurately represent the output of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printers.

This update includes a new profile for the MakerBot fifth generation printer. Direct USB printing with this printer profile is not supported yet. You can export the files you want to print to a USB stick and then print them locally.

Photoshop now supports DMM.com 3D printing service for users in Japan.

Bump map and normal map filters

You can now create bump maps and normal maps from any image that you open in Photoshop. With the image open, select Filter > 3D > Generate Bump Map or Filter > 3D > Generate Normal Map.

In earlier versions of Photoshop CC, lines or points added to an object looked flat when rendered. In this update to the Photoshop CC 2014 release, the rendered points or lines have volume. Points look like little spheres on the object and lines look like cylinders.

Improvements in this update make painting 3D models faster and easier.

Photoshop can now open files in the VRML, adobe photoshop cc 2014 download, IGES, U3D, and PLY formats. Also, you can now export objects as U3D and VRML files.

Distances from the canvas: When you hold down the Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) key while hovering outside a shape, Photoshop displays distances from the canvas.

  • You can package the Linked Smart Objects in a Photoshop document, such that their source files are saved to a folder on your computer. A copy of the Photoshop document is saved along with the source files in the folder. Select File > Package.
  • You can convert an embedded Smart Object to a Linked Smart Object. Transforms, filters, and other effects applied to the embedded Smart Object are preserved when it is converted. Select Layer > Smart Objects > Convert To Linked.
  • Workflow improvement: When you try to perform an operation on a Linked Smart Object whose source file is missing, you are prompted that the Smart Objects must be rasterized or resolved.

The toner image is then transferred onto an electrophotographic recording medium. The toner images formed on the respective image forming units are superimposed to be transferred onto the intermediate transfer belt. The toner images superimposed on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt are secondarily transferred onto the electrophotographic recording medium to be outputted.
